Permaculture Training In Koshi

Permaculture denotes Permanent Agriculture, a development of agricultural eco-system that helps bring self-sufficiency and sustainability in farming. Given the severity of the problem from global to local scale due to unsustainable farming practices, agriculture has become a burden to those who carry out and a poison for those who consume. The need for ample food production for the rapidly growing mass, particularly in developing and under-developed countries, has given rise to practices of excessive use of chemical fertilizers, destruction of forests and wildlife for food production which has in turn created an opposite effect of low yields through soil degradation, food contamination, adverse climates, species extinction and many more. So, it is of essence to protect the most vulnerable, which is the poor communities in the most rural areas, against malpractices whose effects they are not aware of.

Keeping in mind the recent complaints from locals regarding their degrading food production, soil quality and yields not enough to even sustain their livelihood, our employee Prabighya Basnet, who has a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies and also expertise on Permaculture went to visit the village where our

The locals have been using pesticides brought from India as the border is very close to the village. The local farmers have been using the pesticides for a long time and with each year now, they realized their crop yields decreasing. With their production declining, they are pressured to use even more and more pesticides to increase growth which has deteriorated the soil quality, died the nutrients in soil and caused low crop yields in the long run. With the excessive use of pesticides, they have complained of health problems due to the consumption of such poisonous crops.

We conducted a 3 day training program in the Camp, making the participants aware of how their activities could have led to such anomalies, its effects in the short and long run and encouraged them to switch to Permaculture Farming techniques. The training helped them to understand ways to improve soil, keep local seeds, techniques to help them make their own compost to improve soil which is called Green Manuring. Prabighya was excited to see the enthusiasm and desire on the locals to change the current use of pesticides and make their community example to others. Our travel agency
