In this 2-day hiking tour and culture tour, we take you through some of the finest trails within the valley of Kathmandu from where you can enjoy magnificent views of the valley as well as the Himalayas. You will also visit a few highly revered Hindu and Buddhist shrines, and have the opportunity to appreciate not only the natural beauty of Kathmandu, but also observe the lifestyle and culture of the locals.
Shivapuri, situated at an altitude of 2563m north of Kathmandu, is the second highest hill around Kathmandu Valley, after the famous Phulchowki hill. Located in this hill is 'Bagdwar', the source of the Holy River Bagmati and is the biggest water supply to the Kathmandu Valley
After early breakfast, we drive for about 35 mins to “Dada Gaun” and visit the highly revered “Buddhanilkantha” Temple along the way. Dada Gaun is a local village with beautiful views of the valley from the top of a hill. We start our hike from the south western boundary of Shivapuri.
Buddhanilkantha is one of the temples with the biggest statue of Lord Vishnu sleeping in the ocean bed which lies 8 kms north of Kathmandu. From Budhanilkantha, we walk through Shivapuri conservation area. This is a Government protected forest where over 500 species of vegetation are found.
It is a gradual downhill hike through narrow and dusty trail for about two hours to Nagi Gumpa. Relax and enjoy stunning views of the valley, have packed lunch and finally plain trail of one and half hours to Kapan Monastery. Drive back to the hotel.
Nagi Gumpa is situated at an altitude of 2330m north of Kathmandu and above Budhanilkantha Temple is only Monastery for the Nuns where about 200 Nuns practice Buddhism and foreigners often come there for meditation.
Champadevi, a 2300 meters high peak, acts as the border in the southeastern corner of the valley separating it from the Makwanpur district. Besides the hiking experience this hill has a Buddhist stupa and people visit this place especially on the day of full moon to pay homage to the lord.
After early breakfast, we drive to Pharping which lies 16 Km south of the Kathmandu and start the hike. From here, we hike up following the trail covered by pine forest for about 3 hours to Champadevi. The hilltop offers magnificent view of the Himalayan ranges, especially Langtang and Annapurna. After Lunch and relaxing for a bit, we hike down following the same trail for about 1 and half hours. Sightseeing of Dakshinkali Temple along the way when returning to Kathmandu.
Dakshinkali Temple, dedicated to Goddess Kali “The Terrifying” is where pilgrims congregate regularly. The temple is surrounded by lush green forest of trees and the area is a popular picnic spot for local people. We also visit Pharping, with its shrine of Shekh Narayan that is richly endowed with history and art. This picturesque shrine stands on a small hill, and the pools below the shrine abound with fish.
